Dear Parents, Families, and Students:

On behalf of our staff and administration, welcome to Capital High School! You have arrived at a school that expects and believes that you will achieve at exceptionally high levels. High school presents a variety of opportunities for new classes, friends, expectations, and materials. Our goal is to challenge students academically, help them grow socially and emotionally, and guide them toward independent thinking and problem-solving for college and career readiness.

Capital High School is not only Kanawha County’s magnet school for the performing arts, but also the only high school in the State of West Virginia that teaches traditional instrumental music, vocal music, drama, dance, television, and media production every period of every school day.

Academic opportunities are limitless at Capital High School. Students have the opportunity to graduate with over 36 hours of accumulated Advanced Placement (AP) and Dual Credit (DC) upper-level mathematics courses, which translate directly into college-level credits.

Capital High fields at least 20 different athletic teams each school year, and our school has won at least 26 athletic and academic state championships since opening in 1988. Due to our extensive Club/Activity Program, every Capital High School student is directly involved in extracurricular or co-curricular activities.

The administration, faculty, and staff of Capital High School has many exciting and positive changes on the horizon for the upcoming school year:

  1. Communication – We plan to enhance the quality and frequency of communication among administration, teachers, students, and parents.

  2. Collaboration – Similarly, we plan to enhance collaborative efforts among the administrative team, teachers, students, and parents.

  3. Consistency – Academic and behavioral expectations will be established across all classes. Consistency will be improved upon with scheduling, as well as for curriculum and instruction.

  4. Community Involvement and Perceptions – We plan to improve upon parent and community involvement at Capital High School. Positive news will be readily shared with the community.

Thank you for your unwavering support and dedication to our most important assets, your students. The foundation of our future accomplishments is directly correlated to our combined efforts. We are looking forward to a successful 2015-16 school year filled with enriching activities and learning experiences. Best wishes for a wonderful summer. Go Cougars!

Sincerely,

Larry D. Bailey, Principal
