KCS students stepped outside the classroom and into their communities.

Last Friday, students across the county put their plans into action.
Cleaning up, giving back, and showing what student leadership looks like in real life.

From school grounds to city parks and community spaces, our students got to work. Some spent time with residents in nursing homes, others volunteered at the Ronald McDonald House, and some supported the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association.

To see a list of all the projects students took on, click the "KCS Students Lead County-Wide Service" article in the comments.

We are proud of the way they’re representing their schools and their communities. ❤️

KCS Spring 2026 Summative Assessment Calendar. Digital SAT School Day is April 15th, 2026 for 11th grade students. WV Alternate Summative Assessment is April 13 through May 15 for 3rd though 8th grade and 11th grade. WV General Summative Assessment is May 4-May 22 for 3rd through 8th grade and 11th grade. Good Luck.
This school year, students in grades 3–12 will take part in an online safety lesson during the school day.

This comes from a West Virginia law (SB 466) passed in 2024, which requires all schools to provide this type of instruction and to use a state-approved platform. For our students, that platform is CyberSWAT/SKYLL.

The lessons are designed to help students better understand situations they may face online:

🔹 Protect their personal information
🔹 Recognize unsafe situations online
🔹 Avoid scams and manipulation
🔹Know when to reach out to a trusted adult
🔹Students will move through interactive, scenario-based experiences, referred to as stories.

Grades 3–5: Realm Quest
Grades 6–12: Miss Informed

We do want families to be aware that some of the situations presented in these lessons are more serious in nature and may introduce topics that you may prefer to approach in your own way or on your own timeline.

Because of that, we encourage families to review the materials ahead of time.

You can see what topics will be covered in the course and read a breakdown of each story in the parent guide,
https://wveis.k12.wv.us/cyberswat

While this instruction is required under state law, families do have the option to choose an alternative lesson for their child. The opt out form is available in the parent guide.

A screenshot of the online safety course that West Virginia students must take. The course is set up as a game that allows students to make choices based on certain events. In this picture, the teacher in the game says, "It is when someone makes a fake message that looks real to trick you into giving up personal information." Below that quote block is two responses for students to pick from. The first says, "So the secret server was bait?" and the second says, " That's so sneaky. It looked totally real!"

“Fighting for Tomorrow” — a powerful piece by the Capital High School Dance Company — has been selected for the 2026 West Virginia Dance Festival!

Choreographed by CHS alum Talia Jordan, this performance will take the stage at the WV Cultural Center later this month. An incredible honor and a reflection of the talent, creativity, and hard work behind the scenes.

Way to go, Cougars 👏

🍔 A quick update on school menus.

We’ve made a change to how Kanawha County Schools shares monthly menus. The previous setup worked well for most families, but it didn’t fully meet updated ADA accessibility requirements.

This new format ensures all families can access menu information, including those using screen readers or other assistive technology.

Everything is now organized on one webpage, with quick links to text based menus for each school level and program. You also have the option to download and/or screenshot a traditional view of the menu at the bottom of each individual menu page.

🛜 To find the updated page on our website:
🔹 Click on Menu in the top right corner of the KCS Homepage
🔹 Look under the Parent/Guardian column
🔹 Click on School Menus | Kanawha County Schools
🔹 From that page, you can search for the menu you need

👉 A link to the new page is in the comments of this post!

🎤✨ Not your average competition… this is Poetry Out Loud.

Think: poetry + performance + confidence, all on one stage. And our students showed Up. 👏

Earlier this month, KCS students took on the state Poetry Out Loud competition:

🔥 6 reached the semifinals
🔥 5 advanced to the FINAL round
🔥 3 finished TOP 10 statewide (out of 3,000+ students!) 🤯

Top 10 in West Virginia:
🏆 Tamara Gregory – St. Albans
🏆 Katarina Lowe – Sissonville
🏆 Norah Warmke – Capital

Not just memorizing a poem but owning the stage.
And they delivered. 💥

KCS families, here’s some calendar news!

Kanawha County Schools has been granted a waiver by the West Virginia Department of Education for the 180-day instructional requirement.
❄️ Snow days that happened between:

August 15th, 2025 - March 16th, 2026 will NOT need to be made up this school year.

🗓️ That means, as of today (3/16), the last day of school will remain Friday, May 29.

If the district experiences another full districtwide closure between now and the end of the school year, the calendar could change. If that happens, we will share an update with families.

☀️ Quick Spring Break challenge.

Spring Break is here.

Which means two things:

⏰ No alarms.

💨 🐢 Time somehow moves both fast and slow at the same time.

So instead of letting the week just… disappear… we’re trying something simple.

Not homework.
Not a packet.
Not a 47-step challenge.

Just five small Side Quests.

One per day.
Quick. Doable. Anywhere.

Elementary, middle, high...everyone can play.

Each weekday we’ll post:
🔵 One Side Quest
🔵 One secret word
🔵 Zero pressure

Collect all five words and on Friday you’ll unlock the Main Quest.

No prizes.
No sign-ups.
Just bragging rights… and maybe a feature.

Spring Break starts Monday.

Let’s see who’s playing.

We’re also sharing a Side Quest Bingo board. Complete just one square or go for bingo and see how many you can check off this week. Which one will you try first?

Tag a friend, classmate, or family member who should try a Side Quest with you.

🎒✨ Kindergarten starts with moments like this.

A little curiosity.
A little creativity.
And sometimes… a little mess.

If your child will be starting kindergarten this fall, Transition to Kindergarten Day is the perfect first step. Students and families will have the chance to visit their school, meet teachers, and start getting excited about the year ahead.

📅 Each elementary school has its own date and time.

Growth worth celebrating 📈🍎

We recently recognized several of our secondary teachers whose students showed the most growth on mid-year benchmark testing, and that growth doesn’t happen by accident.

Our teachers are always refining lessons, trying new strategies, and finding what works best for their students. Walk into classrooms across the county and you’ll see learning that’s active, engaging, and focused on helping every student move forward.

Elementary teachers and service personnel will be recognized at an upcoming meeting, too. When our whole school community works together, students grow. 💙

👩‍🏫 A full list of the teachers who were recognized is on our website. The link is in the comments!
